The Fontié Forum (Fontié ki Kwaze International Forum – Crossed Borders) announces its series of  WebConversations, monthly broadcasts hosted by students from the University of São Paulo (USP) and the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), Brazil.

WebConversations brings people around the world together in live creative and multicultural dialogue, using the online academic platform, via the ConferenceWeb technology. The series of WebConversations is part of the third edition of the Fontié ki Kwaze International Forum (Crossed Borders). In this third edition, the Forum proposes to organize qualified debates on Migration and Social Transformation from a humanist and critical perspective, considering the huge challenges during this political economic and sanitary crisis amplified by the impact of Covid-19 with unprecedented effects in countries with high level of inequalities.  

2020 – WebConversations 

Join us in a series of WebConversations co-hosted by the Fontié Forum  Network, with the support of the School of Communication and Arts of the University of São Paulo and the Brazilian Federal Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education. Interdisciplinary panels made up of researchers, artists, activists, media critics, cultural and government officials to discuss social transformation challenges during this political economic crisis amplified by the impact of Covid-19.

WebConversation #1: Global crisis, dependent capitalism and social control

We ask: how can we transcend the boundaries of capitalist oppressions and social control to illuminate the complex social, political, economic and sanitary crisis we face today in?

What are the particularities we are facing within the rising of the extreme right in Eastern Europe and Latin America? 

What are the impacts for the working class, and in specific for migrant workers, in these regions? What are the current conditions for social transformation?

On May 1st, in the face of a global crisis amplified by the pandemic, we will have the honor of having two international presentations, from Hungary, and a presentation from Brazil:

  • Attila Melegh, Speaker (sociologist, economist and historian. Associate professor at Corvinus University, Budapest).
  • He has taught in the United States, Russia, Georgia and Hungary. He is associate professor at Corvinus University, Budapest, and a senior researcher at the Demographic Research Institute. His research focuses on the global history of social change in the 20 th century, and international migration. Author of the book ‘On the East/West Slope, Globalization, Nationalism, Racism and Discourses on Central and Eastern Europe’ published at CEU Press. He is the founding director of Karl Polányi Research Center at Corvinus University.
  • Geröcs Tamás, Speaker (economist, research fellow at the Institute of World Economics; visiting fellow at Binghamton University). His research field of interest is Eastern Europe with a special regard for economic transformation in Hungary and other post-socialist countries, theoretical questions on global and historical uneven development, semi-peripheral dependent development with respect to external financial dependencies, vertical specialization in the regional automotive value
  • chains. Gerőcs is also a member of the Budapest-based Working Group for Public Sociology

  • Fabio Luis Barbosa, Speaker (professor of Latin American Studies in the Federal University of São Paulo. He is the author of “Power and Impotence. A history of South America under progressivism (1998-2016)” (Brill: 2020) among other books);
  • Daniel Perseguim, Moderator (M.A., University of São Paulo – USP)
  • Karina Quintanilha, Moderator (Ph.D candidate, Department of Sociology, State University of Campinas – UNICAMP)

Fontié ki Kwaze International Forum (Crossed Borders // Fronteiras Cruzadas) 

Fontié ki Kwaze (Fontié Forum) is an interdisciplinary academic, social and artistic initiative that seeks to make visible and stimulate critical thinking in the field of contemporary transnational migrations, contributing to a social-technical network engaged with immigrants and refugees. The project was conceived in 2017 by the Multidisciplinary Research Center for Collaborative Creations and Digital Languages (COLABOR-USP), held by professor Artur Matuck, in cooperation with research groups from PUC-SP, UNICAMP, UFRN, PGEHA-USP, FFLCH-USP among other, socially engaged with groups and entities like:

  • Social Union of Haitian Immigrants (USIH)
  • “Casa de Assis/Sefras” (Center for Welcoming Immigrants, a public service of the São Paulo City Hall managed by Sefras that houses more than one hundred immigrants of different nationalities)
  • Palestinian restaurant Al Janiah
  • Kasinha Bay4s Cultural, organized by the Bolivian artist Juan Cusicanki.

The activities organized by the Forum in and outside the University is stimulating the expansion of social-technical networks with active participation of researchers, lawyers, social workers, artists / cultural producers, communicators, health professionals , immigrant movements and collectives (eg. Coletivo Si, Yo Puedo; Coletivo de Base Warmis), organizations in defense of migration (eg. Ong África do Coração; Coletivo Conviva Diferente; Cátedra Sérgio Vieira de Mello; Rede de Proteção em Saúde de Imigrantes e Refugiados; PROMIGRA; CDHIC), and institutions such as the Public Defender’s Office and the Municipal Immigrant’s Council.

Since its beginning, the Fontie Forum has been producing unique interactions and collaborations between Universities and immigrants, producing academic and cultural events especially in São Paulo. SUPPORT

Since 2017, the support of the School of Communication and Arts of the University of São Paulo and the Brazilian Federal Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education (CAPES) made possible 2 editions of the the Fontié ki Kwaze International Forum (Crossed Borders // Fronteiras Cruzadas) with three days of international conferences, debates, working groups, workshops and culture events at USP. The third edition is under development, and it had to be postponed due to COVID-19 pandemy.
